Criminals will no longer have paternity rights over children born through rape! A new law amendment has been introduced in the UK that ensures that criminal fathers will no longer have parental rights. The change is included in the government’s amendment to the Victims and Courts Bill tabled in Parliament. The criminal father will no longer have the power to comment on or interfere with the child’s education, treatment, and travel. Labour Party MP
Natalie Fleet was the one who led the way in this law reform. She had revealed that an older man sexually assaulted her at the age of 15 and that the child was born from it. Fleet said that this law is about the safety of women and children who have been raped. She pointed out that paternity rights over children born through rape are being used by criminals as a weapon to silence women. Deputy Prime Minister David Lamy
said that this law is a crucial step in strengthening public trust in the justice system. He said the move was taken with the safety of children and mothers in mind, and that such perpetrators would not be given the opportunity to hurt their victims again in the future. Alex Davis-Jones, Minister for Victims and Violence Against Women, also said that these legal reforms were part of the government’s mission to ensure the safety of women and children.
