UK police are to trial cutting-edge ‘live facial recognition’ (LFR) technology with the aim of identifying habitual offenders and those who break court orders. Hampshire Police has taken the lead in this experiment. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has started this high-tech check in busy areas including Southampton city centre. This is a method of analysing faces captured on camera
in real time and comparing them with a list of criminals held by the police. The system identifies individuals by digitally measuring features such as the distance between a person’s eyes and the length of their jaw. This system is very helpful in catching criminals as well as finding missing people.
Authorities have stated that these checks are carried out in a very transparent manner. This system is set up in clearly marked vans instead of hidden cameras. To ensure the privacy of ordinary people, images of criminals who are not on the list will be removed from the system within a minute. Superintendent Alex Charge says the system will make a big difference in areas such as Shirley High Street, where shoplifting and anti-social behaviour are rampant. The government has decided to tighten such checks nationwide following the success of the technology in London, where 580 people have been caught using it in the past
year . Among those caught are 52 sex offenders who have been released after violating court orders. There are currently two vans
in Hampshire, but the Home Office has allocated funding to deploy more vans in the coming months. The authorities said that people will be informed about the locations of the checks a week in advance on the police website and on social media.
