Malayali appointed as MHRA’s Chief Medical and Scientific Officer

Prof. Jacob George, a Malayali, has been appointed as the first Chief Medical and Scientific Officer of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This is a key position that will help achieve scientific excellence. Moreover, the MHRA’s scientific policies can also shape future regulations. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and Therapeutics at the University of Dundee Medical School.

He also works as a Consultant Physician . Prof. Jacob George is qualified in Clinical Pharmacology and General Internal Medicine. Born to a Malayali couple who settled in Malaysia, he completed his medical education in the UK. The MHRA plays a very important role in public health management.

They are also playing a key role in accelerating innovation in this field. Prof. Jacob George said he was delighted to join the MHRA at a crucial time.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, the European Society of Cardiology and the British Hypertension Society. He is also a Visiting Professor at the Dnipro State Medical University in Ukraine. An alumnus of the Universities of Sheffield and Dundee, Addham is Chair of the Scottish Government Access to Medicines, Horizon Scanning Advisory Board, and National Chair of the Scottish Medicines Consortium.
