Syrian refugee who attacked woman in Cardiff gets 3 years in prison; will be deported

Syrian refugee Fawaz Alsamou has been sentenced to three years and one month in prison at Newport Crown Court for sexually assaulting a woman in Cardiff. The man, who lived in Huddersfield, was found guilty of strangling the woman under a railway bridge in the Cathays area of Cardiff on May 12 last year. Police say he followed her as she walked home from Pulse nightclub at around 4am. The suspect,

who put his hand was later identified by investigators using CCTV footage. The woman told the court she was too scared to go out alone and could not even work.

Judge Celia Hughes said it was a horrific attack and that she needed to be safe when she was walking alone at night. Alsamou will be deported once he has served his sentence.
