Changes to the UK Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) driving test rules will come into effect in the country from November 24. This is the latest in a series of changes announced by the government in recent weeks to ease a backlog of more than 600,000 driving tests. The changes come amid growing calls for the introduction of a Graduated Driving Licence (GDL).
The DVSA says that by reducing the number of stops from four to three, it will give them more flexibility when planning test routes. The frequency of emergency stops will also be reduced from one in three tests to one in seven tests, but the agency says that the change will not affect the length or number of driving tests available.
The agency says that driving skills must be tested in real-world situations to ensure the safety of road users. Earlier this year, the driving test reforms were piloted at around 20 centres across the country.
